Mount Take Derby Spoils In Championship Cup

MID DISTRICT RUGBY UNION – WEEKEND REVIEW

It was another action-packed Saturday of rugby across the Mid District, with league and cup encounters producing some excellent victories, closely contested battles and a number of postponements.

WRU Community Premiership

Beddau produced a much-needed response to recent disappointing results as they recorded an excellent 15–0 victory away at Ystrad Rhondda.

The Green and Golds delivered a determined performance to keep their hosts scoreless and secure an important victory on the road.

Callaghan Smith contributed a penalty, while Lloyd James and Ewan Roberts crossed for tries, with Ollie Wilde adding a conversion.

The result will provide a welcome confidence boost for Beddau as they look to build momentum in the Premiership.

Merthyr continued their impressive campaign with a commanding 38–5 victory over Bedwas at The Wern.

The Ironmen crossed for six tries, with Jacob Lloyd grabbing a brace and Ryan Hughes, Kenith Lloyd, Travis Hawkins and Evan Wood also touching down. Jacob Lloyd added four conversions to complete a comprehensive victory for the hosts.

WRU Championship Cup

Mountain Ash secured their place in the next stage of the Championship Cup following a dramatic 12–10 victory over Mid District rivals Aberdare.

In a closely contested encounter, there was little to separate the two sides, but the Old Firm did enough to claim a narrow two-point success.

Aberdare's points came through a try from Louis O'Neil, with Cameron Samuel adding a conversion and penalty. The result saw Mountain Ash progress at the expense of their District neighbours.

Elsewhere, Treorchy's encounter with Abercrave and Penallta's trip to Gowerton were both postponed.

WRU Division One Cup

Nelson secured an excellent away victory as they overcame Abercarn 10–6 in a tight cup encounter.

Tries from Sean Richards and Lewis Ryan proved decisive for Nelson, whose defensive efforts ensured they held on for a valuable four-point victory. It was a hard-earned success that keeps Nelson's cup ambitions alive.

Caerphilly emerged victorious from their visit to Wattstown, recording a 21–9 success to progress in the competition.

The hosts remained competitive during the opening half, with Matthew Lewis kicking three first-half penalties to account for Wattstown's nine points.

However, Caerphilly's attacking threat ultimately proved decisive, with Sam Haley and Glenn Lucas crossing for tries. Ben Lewis contributed with the boot, kicking three penalties and a conversion as the visitors completed a hard-fought victory.

The scheduled fixtures between Penarth and Cambrian Welfare, and Dowlais and Abertillery BG, were both called off.

WRU Division Two Cup

Porth Harlequins produced one of the standout performances of the afternoon, recording a convincing 26–0 away victory at Croesyceiliog.

A clean sheet on the road underlined an impressive defensive display from the visitors, who comfortably secured their passage into the next round.

Ynysybwl suffered a narrow defeat as Cowbridge edged a closely fought encounter 18–15.

Just three points separated the sides at the final whistle, with the visitors left disappointed after a competitive cup contest.

The scheduled ties involving Rhydyfelin against Llantrisant and Llantwit Fardre against Pentyrch were both postponed.

WRU Division Three Cup

There was no action to report from the two scheduled Division Three Cup encounters involving Mid District clubs.

Tylorstown's clash with Penygraig was called off, while Senghenydd's fixture against Rhiwbina also fell victim to postponement.

Both ties will now await rearrangement.

WRU Division Four Cup

Gilfach Goch produced an excellent away performance to defeat Blackwood Stars 26–15 and progress in the Division Four Cup.

Riley Cope was influential for the visitors, contributing a try, two penalties and a conversion. Joshua Williams and Gethin Jones also added penalties, while a penalty try completed Gilfach Goch's scoring.

Crickhowell secured a 25–13 victory over Canton to continue their cup journey whilst Bargoed Athletic claimed a convincing 29–14 victory over Brecon Athletic.

Brecon's tries came from Josh Evans and Gareth Price, with Kyran Dillion also contributing a penalty and conversion.

However, Bargoed Athletic had enough attacking firepower to secure a comfortable victory and advance to the next stage.

The scheduled Crumlin against Tonyrefail encounter was postponed.

WRU Division Five Cup

Treherbert enjoyed a successful afternoon as they recorded a 28–12 victory over Caerau Ely.

James Duggan led the way with two tries, while Nico Watkins and Cameron Barratt also crossed the whitewash. It was a strong attacking display from Treherbert, who booked their place in the next round with a convincing victory.

Tref y Clawdd secured a deserved 19–7 victory over CR Cymry Caerdydd to continue their cup campaign.

Huw Layton, Owen Price and Joshua Deakins scored the tries for the hosts, with Layton also successful with two conversions.

Postponements and walkover

There was frustration for several other clubs in the Division Five Cup, with the scheduled encounters between Hafodyrynys and Penallta Athletic, and Glyncoch and Beddau Athletic both called off.

Meanwhile, Cefn Coed were awarded a walkover against Llandaff North and will progress in the competition.
